Cocktail of the Week - The Sacred Heart Heresy

As the days start to tend toward the sultry, Minnie & I often find ourselves searching for an alternative to the darker, plush velvet libations which pair so grandly with winter melancholia & to our standard default spring & summer cocktails, the perfectly polished East Indian colonial gin & tonic, the glib & icy gin martini & the cocktail we've made somewhat famous, the Vodka Blush. Towards that end, we were thrilled to stumble upon The Sacred Heart, a heretical elixir if ever there was one. While feeling the tendrils of absinthe & tequila encircling the grey matter like nut-brown dancers entranced by a dusky slow tarantella, we both found ourselves grinning at the thought of the Christ's heart so encircled by wicked temptation, adding immeasurably to the pleasure of this unlikely combination. In such a thrall to these uncommon spirits, we were reminded of the Muerte del Pecador paintings we've spotted in Mexican folk art galleries around the East Village, where a once-strapping young man writhes in anguish on his deathbed while Our Ancient Serpent & this Jesus fellow vie for his mortal soul, so we thought we'd post these lively tableaux to accompany our recipe for the week. Enjoy, my brothers & sisters.

Ingredients

1-1/2 ounces La Pinta Pomegranate Tequila
3/4 ounce Kubler absinthe
1/2 ounce Pallini limoncello
1/4 ounce lemon juice
lemon twist to garnish

Directions

First, place your cocktail glass in the freezer for 5 minutes to chill, or keep some chilled at all times as we do. Now put all of the ingredients, except for the garnish, into a cocktail shaker filled with ice and shake the mixture vigorously for roughly half a minute. Double strain the mixture into the frosty glass & garnish with the lemon twist.
